Private Hugh Moore
Hugh Moore was born on 24 December 1896 at Ballyearl, Ballylinny, County Antrim, the second of ten children of shoemaker John Moore and his wife Elizabeth (née Montgomery). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Ballyearl with his parents and eight siblings, and working as a tailor.
Moore enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 5 and 11 January 1915 (No.1392 – later Corps of Hussars No.71368).
Later that month he married Agnes Simpson at the Antrim Registrar's Office. Their first child, Hugh, was born later that year.
Moore trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France sometime between 1916 and 1918, possibly with E Squadron on 11 January 1916.
In May 1916 E Squadron came together with D and A Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps until February-March 1918, when the regiment was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit. This meant a 25 per cent reduction in the regiment's numbers, and it is likely that this was the time that Moore was transferred to the 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars.
Moore remained with the Hussars until the end of the war. On 22 February 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
